When it comes to fashion, every generation has their own ideas about what looks good. The teenage fashion of today is not the same as generations past, which is why you need to understand current trends. That knowledge will allow you to help your children pick out the best clothing possible.
Because teens are still growing, it is important that you plan their wardrobe accordingly. If you know that your child has just entered a growth spurt, you should keep the buying at a minimum until it has subsided. Of course, that doesn’t mean you should make your growing teens wear a potato sack to school! Those days are long gone, thank goodness! However, it does mean that you should pay attention to the clothing budget and start teaching your kids how to make smart choices regarding clothes.
For instance, you might want to purchase jeans that are a bit longer for someone in an upward growth spurt. Long shorts are also great because they will fit essentially the same, provided that the youngster doesn’t gain much girth during that burst.
Teenage fashion will probably always include jeans, and you likely prefer different ones that the kids. However, those ripped jeans with faded spots are very in fashion. If you try to make them wear a pair of dark blue jeans with no rips, you will likely be met with groans and objections.
You should find out what the rules are at school and other venues that your children frequent. Some schools have rules regarding the length of shorts for both genders. Girls have additional restrictions for skirts and dresses. Midriffs and other body parts might also be off limits in your school district.
Understanding these rules will help keep you from spending money on clothes that your kids can’t wear. Of course, if you find an article of clothing appropriate, your children can always wear them elsewhere, provided you approve.
Just as with adult clothes, the colors in teen fashion change each season. Because of this, many youngsters are uncomfortable wearing hand-me-downs from older siblings, cousins and neighbors. To minimize the impact, try to get coordinating new pieces with attention-grabbing power. This will give the kids a different focus than wondering whether a shirt is the right shade of green for the year.
Remember too that boys have fashion concerns too. Although many people think about women and girls when it comes to fashionable clothing, that is no longer the case. Many young men are just as concerned about their appearance as their female counterparts. If you have sons, make sure you understand their fashion needs as well.
Although you might feel frustrated when helping your teen select a new wardrobe, you are not alone! The fact is that clothes buying is a challenge that other parents of teens are facing right now. By understanding what is in style and figuring out the best ways to keep your kids looking fashionable, you can ensure your children are happy with their clothes. At least, until the next trend comes along!
